Founded in 1973, Mechatherm has grown to become the UK’s largest supplier of aluminium casthouse equipment, renowned for its bespoke melting and holding furnaces that embody robust British engineering and cutting-edge technologies.
A Journey from Humble Beginnings to Global Leadership
Mechatherm's story began in a spare bedroom in Epsom, where founders Bryan Emes, John Gardner, and Louis Riley started by supplying small furnaces to the UK aluminium industry. The company’s trajectory changed dramatically in the 1990s with the completion of its first large-scale international smelter project. This pivotal moment set Mechatherm on a path of continuous growth and global expansion. A testament to our leadership in the field is the installation of the largest recycling plant of its kind at JW Aluminium in the US in 2021.

We have pioneered innovative solutions aimed at reducing energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste generation in the aluminium recycling process. Our latest research focuses on the feasibility of using hydrogen as a fuel in our melting and holding furnaces, with the hope of implementing this groundbreaking technology in the coming years.

Reflecting on this remarkable journey, Mechatherm Chairman Andrew Riley shared, “Mechatherm has come a long way in the last 50 years from my father’s back bedroom in Epsom to a multinational, award-winning company with its own premises.
